Baseball game vs. FIU cancelled due to rain
Everything seemed to moving along in the Dolphins’ first game in 13 days but a quick moving thunderstorm ended things quickly as the JU baseball team had its contest against FIU cancelled due to rain, Tuesday evening at John Sessions Stadium.

With the score tied, 3-3, with no outs and two runners on for JU in the bottom of the fifth, a lightning strike forced everyone off of the field. Before anyone could make a move for the tarp, the skies opened up and the subsequent rain caused the field to be unplayable after the near one hour delay.

Due to the contest not being official through five innings, all stats were vacated and the contest was officially cancelled when the umpires and coaches met on the field.

Lost in the action was a two-run homer by freshman designated hitter Adam Brett Walker, a solo homer by junior right fielder Esterlin Perozo, a 2-for-2 effort by senior first baseman Alex Martinez and three shutout innings by junior Matt Tomshaw.

“It’s a shame that our guys have to lose their stats for the game but there was no way to get it in,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “We just have to take this as a friendly scrimmage and be ready to do the real thing tomorrow.”

For FIU, Tim Jobe had gone 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Garrett Wittles, who entered the game with the nation’s longest hitting streak (34 games), was 0-for-3 in the game before the contest was called.

The Dolphins and Golden Panthers will play the final game of the series on Wednesday at 3 p.m. as originally scheduled. The contest can be followed on ASun.tv or live stats by logging onto JUDolphins.com.
