UPSET: Baseball shocks #4 Florida, 11-2
With talk of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament on the minds of most people in Green and Gold, the Dolphins made a major statement with one week left in the 2011 regular season as the JU baseball team defeated No. 4 Florida, 11-2, Tuesday evening at McKethan Stadium.
JU (33-18), which ran its record to 2-6 against ranked opponents in 2011, earned its first win over UF (39-14) on the road since a 6-5 decision on March 6, 2007. The Dolphins’ last win over the Gators was a 8-5 win at John Sessions Stadium on March 26, 2008.
With the win, JU handed UF its worst home loss this season and its second worst margin of defeat in 2011 (a 14-1 decision at No. 2 Vanderbilt on May 14).
“We’re coming together at the right time,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “The final week of the regular season is upon us and we are getting healthy, our pitching staff is rounding itself out and our defense improved. When we get all those going with our offense, we are in good shape.”
Senior Matthew Tomshaw (7-3), who ran his record to 4-0 on the road in 2011, got the win after allowing only two runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings of work. Freshman Adam Maxon, senior Chris Kaminski and freshman Chris Anderson each added an inning of shutout relief to finish off the game.
Alex Panteliodis (4-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on four hits with two walk and three strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
Sophomore center fielder Dan Gulbransen went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI while junior shortstop Jimmy Howick and freshman second baseman Taylor Ratliff each finished with multiple hits. Senior right fielder Esterlin Perozo added a three-run homer while sophomore first baseman Adam Brett Walker and junior third baseman Kevin Lehane each tallied two-run doubles.
Josh Adams led the Gators by going 2-for-4 while Mike Zunino hit a two-run homer in the first inning.
JU took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first when Lehane hit a two-run double down the left field line and Howick hit an RBI single through the left side.
The Gators cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the first when Zunino hit a two-run shot over the left center wall.
The Dolphins made it 4-2 in the third when Gulbransen hit a solo shot off the scoreboard in right field.
JU increased the margin to 6-2 in the fourth when junior left fielder Jonathan Murphy hit an RBI triple to left center and Gulbransen knocked an RBI single back up the middle.
The Dolphins made it 9-2 in the fifth when Perozo hit a three-run shot to left center.
JU made it 11-2 in the top of the eighth when Walker hit a two-run double to left center.
The Dolphins will next travel to Kennesaw State to close out the 2011 regular season beginning on Thursday at 6 p.m. The contest can followed through live stats by logging onto JUDolphins.com.
