Baseball’s 2011 recruiting class earns national recognition
The JU baseball program had its recruiting class recognized by Collegiate Baseball for the sixth straight season, as the Dolphins secured a No. 46 ranking for the 2011 signees in the national top 40 poll.
The Dolphins also had their recruiting classes ranked in the 2006, 2007 and 2010 polls, while getting honorable mention accolades in the 2008-09 editions.
“We have put together a good recruiting class,” JU head coach Terry Alexander said. “Even more than the talent we were able to assemble, the kids fit perfectly for the types of people we recruit to be part of Jacksonville University. We excited for the new faces to come into the program to replace the outgoing seniors. We did lose some kids to the draft, but all programs go through it. Overall, we are excited with the class we have entering the 2012 season.”
The class is also the 14th nationally recognized under Associate Head Coach Tim Montez, who has spent time as a recruiting coordinator at Fresno State, Arkansas, Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara.
“It is nice to be recognized on a national scale,” Montez said. “Recruiting is a team effort, and without the help of all of our entire coaching staff, especially assistant coach and regional recruiting coordinator Tommy Murphy, our admissions office and our entire support staff and administration, we would not be able to bring in the high caliber student-athletes that we have over the past six years.
“When you have four freshmen all America honorees over the past two years, it is a testament not only to our baseball program, but also to our fine academic institution.”
The 2011 recruiting class includes nationally-ranked RHP Nolan Peterson (Milwaukee, Wis.), RHP/C/IF Alex McRae (New Berlin, Wis.) and LHP/OF Richard Williams (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian).
Other signees include local products C/IF Garrett Ruckel (Stanton College Prep) and P Jeff Tanner (Episcopal) as well as OF Dylan Dillard (Kissimmee, Fla.).
The Dolphins also added transfers IF Jake Huxtable (Santa Fe College), LHP Corben Madden (Seminole State College), RHP Drew Woods (Wallace CC), IF Ethan Loosen (FSCJ) and RHP Wes Torrez (Johnson City CC) to the class.
