Walker II named to the Golden Spikes Award preseason watch list
For the second straight season, junior Adam Brett Walker II is one of 50 players on the preseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award announced by USA Baseball on Thursday.
Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. The award is sponsored by Major League Baseball and presented each year to the player who best exhibits exceptional on-field ability and exemplary sportsmanship.
In 2011, UCLA’s Trevor Bauer, the No. 3 pick in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft, won the prestigious award. Past winners also include Terry Francona (1980), Will Clark (1985), Robin Ventura (1988), Jason Varitek (1994), J.D. Drew (1997), Mark Prior (2001), Jered Weaver (2004), Tim Lincecum (2006), David Price (2007), Buster Posey (2008), Stephen Strasburg (2009) and Bryce Harper (2010).
Walker II earned his way to be a semifinalist in 2011 after leading the A-Sun with a .409 batting average, 99 hits and 23 doubles in helping the Dolphins reach the NCAA regionals for the fourth time in the last six seasons. He also paced the squad with 13 home runs, 75 RBI, 165 total bases and a .685 slugging percentage. His hits and total bases totals each broke single-season records for the program.
Walker II batted .446 with 16 doubles, six home runs and 42 RBI in conference play to take home the A-Sun Player of the Year and first team all-conference honors. Walker II also received A-Sun all-tournament honors after pacing the Dolphins with a .429 average (6-14) with a home run and two RBI.
After strong sophomore season, Walker II has be named preseason All-America by six publications, the A-Sun preseason Player of the Year and preseason all-conference.
The Wisconsin native also begins 2012 tied for seventh in home runs at 29 in the career books with Pete Clifford (2003-07) and Rich Katz (1971-74). In other categories, Walker II needs eight doubles, 50 total bases and 60 hits to crack the top 10 all-time, respectively.
The Dolphins open the 2012 season tonight at USC in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. EST. Senior right-handed pitcher Steve Eagerton is slated to face Trojan righty Andrew Triggs. Fans can listen to the action live on 1010xl or follow the action through the links on JUDolphins.com.
