Green squad takes Game 1 of the Fall World Series, 12-7
Junior RHP Glenn Witkowski had a strong outing on the mound while the Green squad tallied 12 runs on 14 hits to defeat the Black team, 12-7, in Game 1 of the Green & Black Fall World Series on Thursday night at John Sessions.
Witkowski earned the win after allowing three runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Sophomore RHP Matt Loosen was tagged with the loss.
Witkowski’s solid performance was supported by a 14-hit offensive outburst led by senior catcher Jeremy Gillan’s 3-for-4, two RBI effort. Freshman outfielder Joey Belviso finished 2-for-6 with three RBI, freshman infielder Jimmy Howick went 2-for-3 with an RBI, redshirt-freshman first baseman Kevin Lehane had a three-run homer and sophomore shortstop Jamaal Hawkins finished 3-for-5.
The Black team had a strong offensive game, but was hampered by poor performances on the mound. Leading hitters for the Black team were redshirt-junior first baseman Alex Martinez (2-3, three RBI), junior outfielder Esterlin Perozo (1- 4, two RBI) and junior second baseman Chuck Opachich (3-4).
Game Two of the series will be on Friday night at 6 p.m. at John Sessions Stadium. The final game will be on Saturday at 3 p.m.
