The dramatics continue in 2009 as the Dolphins erased a 2-0 deficit in the ninth before senior left fielder Kyle Fleming drew a bases loaded walk with two outs in the 10th inning to lead the JU baseball team to a 3-2 win over Bethune-Cookman, Wednesday evening at John Sessions Stadium.

JU (28-13) left a game-high 10 runners on base but got a solo home run by junior first baseman Alex Martinez and a suicide squeeze bunt by senior designated hitter Dan Maier to send things into extra innings.

B-CU (24-23) blew its second consecutive lead in the ninth despite holding the Dolphins scoreless through eight innings.

In the 10th, junior second baseman Chuck Opachich led off with a single to right and then stole second. With one out and Opachich on third, senior catcher Jeremy Gillan was intentionally walked and senior right fielder Thomas Myers drew a walk to load the bases. With two outs, Fleming drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to drive in the winning run and give JU some momentum.

“Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good I guess,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “Bethune came out and had us on our heels all night but we found another way to come out with a win. It’s been a long week and now we get a chance to get out of town for a while.”

Sophomore Chris Kaminski (4-1) earned the win after hurling two innings of scoreless relief. Senior Billy Schlee got the no-decision after allowing one unearned run on four hits with two strikeouts through four innings. Senior Joey Wedner, freshman Baker Chapman and junior Kyle Kriech combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Edgar Serra (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing one run on one hit with three walks and a strikeout in 0.2 innings of relief. Samuel Rodriguez also earned a no-decision despite scattering two hits and striking out four in five shutout innings.

Emmanuel Castro led the Wildcats by going 3-for-4 from the plate to register the only multi-hit performance of the evening.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when a run scored on a fielding error by the Dolphins with two outs.

B-CU made it 2-0 in the fifth when Alejandro Jimenez hit an RBI single through right side with two outs.

The Dolphins evened things up with two runs in the ninth after a solo homer by Martinez and a suicide squeeze by Maier. Martinez led off the inning with a lined shot over the left center wall to tally his team-leading ninth round tripper of the season. Senior pinch-hitter Kyle Fleming drew a walk in the next at-bat and then advanced to third when the throw to gun him down at second rolled into center field.

With one out, Maier laid down a bunt towards the first base side of the mound to score Fleming from third and send the game into extra frames.

The Dolphins will return to their conference schedule with a three-game series at Kennesaw State beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The game can be seen live through ASun.TV and heard live on 1010XL with Barry Milligan calling all of the action on
