Jeremy Gillan earns third team all-Ping!Baseball honors
Senior catcher Jeremy Gillan continues to garner awards in preparation for the 2009 MLB Draft as he was named third team all-Ping!Baseball after helping the JU baseball team to the 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Title and their third NCAA Regional bid in the last four years.
“Jeremy is well deserving of any award,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “I think the balance of recognition for his work on the field and in the classroom speaks volumes for the type of person he is. We are all excited to get a phone call soon and find out where he is going to begin his professional career.”
Gillan, who was a 2009 Preseason All-Sun selection, was named first team all-conference, all-tournament and all-Gainesville Regional for his play on the field.
Academically, he garnered 2009 ESPN the Magazine First Team All-America honors after posting a 3.74 GPA as an exercise science major. Gillan has also garnered A-Sun all-academic and Dean’s List honors in his two seasons with the program.
The Port St. Lucie, Fla. native finished his final season with team highs in batting average (.400), doubles (21), RBI (62), total bases (144), slugging percentage (.670) and on-base percentage (.485). He also became the first JU player to finish the year hitting .400 since Chad Hauseman accomplished the feat in 2003.
Gillan will look to become the 40th Dolphin to be drafted under Alexander as the 2009 MLB Draft begins tomorrow in New York.
