Gillan and Loosen named to A-Sun All-Conference Team
Junior catcher Jeremy Gillan got justification as one of the top catchers in the Atlantic Sun Conference as he earned second team honors, while freshmen pitcher Matt Loosen gave the Dolphins something to look forward to in the future by receiving all-freshman team accolades, it was announced by the conference office Tuesday.
“We are certainly proud of all of our players and especially the ones who have outstanding years,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “Jeremy had a tremendous season for us at the plate and in the field and proved that he belongs at the Division I level. Matt came up big for us on numerous occasions and considering he’s only a freshman makes us excited about the next three years.”
Gillan, who was a transfer from Indian River CC, led the Dolphins in hits (83), doubles (10), home runs (9), RBI (60), total bases (120), slugging percentage (.545), sacrifice flies (6), multi-hit games (27), multi-RBI games (16) and fielding percentage (.987). He finished with a season-high 13-game hitting streak and ended the year with an 11-game streak still in tact, tallied a team-high four hits at Georgia Southern, drove in a team-high six RBI at North Florida and connected on two home runs in his final game against Kennesaw State.
Loosen was a jack-of-all-trades for the Dolphin pitching staff as a true freshman and ended the year with team-lows in ERA (3.52) and opponent batting average (.235). He also ranked second on the squad with four wins, 22 appearances and two saves on the year. In a series weekend against Mercer, he made two appearances against the Bears which included 4.1 innings of scoreless relief with a season-high seven strikeouts to secure a win in game one and one inning of scoreless relief for a save in game three.
