Mercer uses the long ball to down Dolphins 13-5

MACON, Ga. ---- The Mercer Bears used four home runs and timely hitting to defeat the Dolphins 13-5 in Macon, Ga. on Thursday evening.

The Dolphins (9-17, 2-2 A-Sun) jumped on top early Jake Huxtable (Winter Springs, Fla./Santa Fe College) reached on a two base error in the first inning. He advanced to third on a ground out by Nathan Koslowski (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) and scored on a single by Alex McRae (West Allis, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower). Brady North (Tampa, Fla./Hillsboro CC) then lined a double to the wall scoring McRae and putting the Dolphins up 2-0.

The lead was short lived the Bears (22-7, 5-2 A-Sun) added a pair of runs of their own on a two run homer by preseason All Conference player Derrick Workman to knot the score at 2-2.

The Dolphins kept the heat on in the second. Dylan Dillard (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola) reached on a two out walk. Zachary Houck (Orange Park, Fla./Eagles View Academy) followed with a single advancing Dillard to third. Huxtable singled to left scoring Dillard and putting the Dolphins ahead 3-2.

The Bears answered back in the bottom of the second with a run on two hits to even the score at 3-3 and then added three more runs on a Nick Backlund three run homer in the bottom of the third.

The Dolphins added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-5. Huxtable lead off with a single to right. Koslowski followed with a walk. One out later North singled to right scoring Huxtable and advancing Koslowski to third. Ethan Loosen (Uniondale, N.Y./FSCJ) then laid down a perfect suicide squeeze to cut the lead to 6-5.

The Bears brought out the long ball again in the bottom half of the sixth when David Reid Foley homered to deep right of starter Chris Anderson (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) to make it 8-5.

The Bears added five more runs in the bottom half of the seventh. The big blow a grand slam by Austin Barrett to round out the scoring at 13-5.

Anderson (4-2) pitched 6+ innings allowing eight earned runs on eleven hits while striking out ten in the loss.
