Baseball Stays Perfect with 6-3 Win over Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Junior RHP Neal Frontz (Jacksonville/Trinity/Florida JC) earned his second win of the season while sophomores Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) and Doug Fowler (High Point, N.C.) each drove in two runs as JU baseball defeated Bethune-Cookman, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. JU (3-0) is off to its best start since the 1997 squad went 8-0, while Bethune-Cookman falls to 0-5 on the year.

Frontz (2-0) completed his first start of the 2005 season by allowing three runs (one earned) while scattering six hits and striking out five in 6.0 innings. Senior RHP Ashley Roque (Jacksonville/Bolles/Maryland-Baltimore) hurled 2.0 innings of perfect relief while senior RHP Hunter Davis (Wakulla, Fla.) struck out two batters in the ninth to notch his first save. Freshman shortstop Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) led the squad with two hits in the contest.

Richard Rodriguez (0-2) was tagged with the loss for the Wildcats after allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits in 6.0 innings of work. Carlos Picornell and Jon Roberts each finished with two hits to lead Bethune-Cookman.

JU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after Clifford drove in sophomore Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Englewood) with a double to center field.

Bethune-Cookman took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third after Picornell scored on an error by Murphy at third and Rob Caruso drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Dolphins captured the lead for good in the fourth after scoring three runs on two hits while taking advantage of a Wildcat error. Clifford led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch by Rodriguez. Senior Alex Jamieson (Sarasota, Fla.) followed with an RBI single to left before advancing to third on a fielding error by Randall Vickroy at short. With the bases loaded and two outs, Fowler connected on a two-run single.

The Wildcats scored a run in the sixth when Caruso scored from third on a double steal.

JU added runs in the seventh and the eighth to give the pitching staff some room to work.

The two squads return to action tomorrow as they complete a home-and-home series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Alexander Brest Field.
