Baseball Blanks Georgia Southern, 8-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior LHP Kyle DeVries (Holland, Mich.) earned his second win of the season while sophomore Doug Fowler (High Point, N.C.) went 3-for-3 at the plate with two steals to lead JU baseball to an 8-0 win over Georgia Southern, Tuesday evening at Alexander Brest Field. JU (5-0) is off to its best start since going 8-0 in 1997. Georgia Southern (0-3) was shutout for the first time in 49 games.
DeVries (2-0) hurled 5.0 shutout innings while scattering five hits and striking out two batters. Sophomore RHP Andrew Laughter (Longwood, Fla.), freshman RHP Matt Davis (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) and senior RHP Hunter Davis (Wakulla, Fla.) combined to allow no runs and four hits in 4.0 innings of relief. Sophomore Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Englewood) finished with two hits while freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) drove in three runs.
Josh Lairsey (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on six hits while walking three and striking out two in 2.1 innings. Brett Pelfrey and Logan Phillips finished with multiple hits for the Eagles.
JU jumped out to any early 2-0 lead in the first inning after an RBI single to right by junior Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly to right by senior Alex Jamieson (Sarasota, Fla.). The Dolphins increased the lead to 6-0 with four runs in the third. Sophomore Justin Young (Oviedo, Fla.) drew a bases loaded walk before Lopez cleared the bases with a double to right center.
The Dolphins added a run in the sixth with an RBI groundout by Gronkowski before a solo home run by Young (2) ended the scoring in the contest. The Dolphins will next travel to the Coca-Cola Classic in Mobile, Ala., and will open the tournament against No. 12 Texas A&M on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
