Baseball Falls to No. 12 Texas A&M, 10-2

MOBILE, Ala. - Junior Gordie Gronkowsi (Buffalo, N.Y.) and sophomore Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Englewood) each drove in runs but 12th ranked Texas A&M scored seven in the final two innings to hand JU baseball its first defeat, 10-2, Friday afternoon at the 20th Annual Coca-Cola Classic at Stanky Field. JU falls to 5-1 on the year while the Aggies improve to 3-2.

Junior LHP Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) was tagged with his first loss (1-1) despite allowing only three runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings of work.

Jason Meyer (2-0), a freshman all-american last season, got the win after allowing one run on four hits while striking out five in 6.1 innings of work. Justin Pouk and Ryan Hill each finished with three hits to lead the Aggie offense.

Texas A&M jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning after RBI singles by John Infante and Keith Stein.

JU cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth after Gronkowski drove in senior Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.) with a single through the left side.

The Aggies made it 3-1 in the fifth when Infante drove in Hill with a sacrifice fly to right field. Texas A&M took control of the game in the seventh after scoring four runs on three hits while taking advantage of a Dolphin error.

The Dolphins added another run in the eighth when Murphy drove in sophomore Doug Fowler (High Point, N.C.) with a double down the right-field line.

The Aggies made it 10-2 after scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth.

The Dolphins will next face Wake Forest in the second day of the Coca-Cola Classic on Saturday, at 5:30 EST.
