TAMPA, Fla. - Sophomore Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Englewood) finished with multiple hits and sophomore Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) extended his hitting streak to 10 games but JU baseball suffered its first shutout of the 2005 season, 8-0, Friday evening at Red McEwen Field. Murphy finished 2-for-4 from the plate to lead the Dolphin offense. JU (7-3) and USF (7-5) will play the final game of the three-game set at Red McEwen Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Casey Hudspeth (1-1) earned the win after allowing no runs on six hits while striking out nine batters in 8.0 innings.
Senior RHP Brett Nagy (Jacksonville/Bolles/FCCJ) was tagged with the loss (1-1) after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits while walking three and striking out two in 2.1 innings.
USF jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first after an RBI groundout by Jeff Baisley, an RBI double by Matt McHargue and an RBI single by Brian Baisley.
The Bulls made it 5-0 in the third when Dexter Butler and Ty Taborelli hit back to back RBI singles. USF increased the lead to 6-0 in the fourth after Brian Bailey drove in McHargue from first base with a double to right center field.
USF scored two more runs in the sixth when Jeff Bailey hit a two-run homer over the right field wall.
