Baseball Can't Complete Comeback in 13-8 Loss to Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Junior Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.), sophomore Doug Fowler (High Point, N.C.) and sophomore Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Providence) each finished with two hits to lead a late Dolphin comeback but Belmont scored five in the eighth inning to defeat JU baseball, 13-8, Saturday afternoon at Greer Stadium. JU (9-5, 1-1 Atlantic Sun) dropped its first conference contest while Belmont (7-4, 1-1 Atlantic Sun) snapped a two-game losing skid.

JU scored a run in the seventh and four in the eighth to erase a five-run deficit, but Belmont scored five runs on three base hits while taking advantage of two Dolphin errors in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game.

Blake Owen (2-0) earned the win despite blowing a save opportunity with the bases loaded in the eighth.

Freshman RHP Brock Schnabel (Winter Haven, Fla.) was tagged with the loss (0-1) after allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out four in 2.0 innings. Junior RHP Neal Frontz (Jacksonville/Trinity Christian/Florida JC) earned the no-decision after allowing eight runs (three earned) on eight hits while walking two and striking out five in 5.1 innings.

JU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after an RBI single to right-center field by Gronkowski. Murphy led off the game with a single through the right side before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Sean McHugh (Orange Park, Fla.). With two outs, Grokowski drove in the game's first run.

The Dolphins added two more runs in the third inning after and RBI groundout by Clifford and a passed by Bruin catcher Ben Petsch. After a leadoff walk to Fowler, McHugh hit a double to right field with one out. With runners on second and third, Clifford followed with an RBI ground out to second. In the next at-bat, Petsch allowed a pitch to deflect off his glove back to the screen, allowing McHugh to score from third.

Belmont took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the fifth after Brad Dobner scored on a throwing error at third, Matt Reynolds hit a three-run homer to left field and Wilson Tucker followed with a solo shot to left field.

The Bruins added three more runs in the sixth after an RBI grounder by Aaron Lautman and a two-run single to left by Dobner.

JU cut the defecit to 8-4 in the seventh when Murphy drove in Fowler from second with a base hit up the middle.

The Dolphins rallied for four runs in the eighth (8-8) to even the contest after senior Jon Galui (Palm Beach, Fla.), senior Alex Jamieson (Sarasota, Fla.) and sophomore Preston Pehrson (Annapolis, Md.) each drew a bases loaded walk and freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) scored on a fielding error by Lautman at second.

The Dolphins and Bruins will complete their series on Sunday at 1 p.m. EST at Greer Stadium.
