Baseball Drops 13-2 Contest to Toledo

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior Logan James (Clearwater, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI but Toledo broke out with 13 runs on 15 hits as the Rockets defeated JU baseball, 13-2, Wednesday evening at Alexander Brest Field. JU (11-6) snapped a two-game winning streak while Toledo improves to 2-6.
J.R. Duffey (1-2) earned the win after allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out six batters and walking none in 7.0 innings. Sophomore RHP Andrew Laughter (Longwood, Fla.) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 1.0 innings of relief.
Freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) also drove in a run for the Dolphins while freshman RHP Brock Schnabel (Winter Haven, Fla.) hurled 2.0 scoreless innings in his first career start. Senior Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.), junior Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day), sophomore Doug Fowler (High Point, N.C.) and sophomore Preston Pehrson (Annapolis, Md.) also recorded a hit in the contest. Senior LHP Patrick Gleason (Merritt Island, Fla.), freshman RHP Brian Ferrell (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) and freshman LHP Matt Dobbins (Longwood, Fla.) each combined for 3.0 innings of scoreless relief in the final three frames.
JU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after an RBI double by James to left center field.
Toledo took a 2-1 advantage after an RBI single by Joel Visser and a run scoring wild pitch. The Rockets opened the game up with five runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth to lead 13-1.
The Dolphins added another run in the sixth when Lopez drove in Fowler from third with an RBI single up the middle.
JU will return to Atlantic Sun Conference action this weekend as the Dolphins face Mercer on Friday at 6 p.m.
