Baseball Drops Heartbreaker to Mercer, 2-1

MACON, Ga. - Junior LHP Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) allowed one run in a career-high 7.1 innings but Mercer rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat JU baseball, 2-1, in Atlantic Sun Conference play, Friday evening at Claude Smith Field. JU falls to 11-7 overall and 2-2 in A-Sun play while Mercer improves to 13-9, 1-3.
Freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) finished with two hits while sophomore Doug Fowler (High Point, N.C.) drove in a run with a suicide squeeze. Brickle allowed one run on five hits while walking two and striking out a season-high four in 7.1 innings.
Brantley New (2-0) earned the complete-game win after allowing one run on four hits while striking out eight in 9.0 innings.
Freshman RHP Matt Davis (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) was tagged with the loss (1-1) after allowing a run and three walks in 0.2 innings of relief.
After seven innings of scoreless baseball, JU took the first lead 1-0 after a suicide squeeze by Fowler with one out. Lopez led off the inning with a double to left-center field and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Justin Young (Oviedo, Fla.). Fowler followed with a base hit bunt to short to end the scoreless tie.
Mercer answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth after the Bears drew consecutive walks with the bases loaded.
JU and Mercer will conclude its series with a nine-innings doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
