Baseball Drops Two to Mercer in Doubleheader

MACON, Ga. - Freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) finished 4-for-6 with an RBI in two games and sophomore Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) added three hits and three RBI but Mercer defeated JU baseball, 8-2, in game one and, 5-3, in game two to complete a three-game sweep, Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader at Claude Smith Field. JU falls to 11-9 overall and 3-3 in A-Sun play while Mercer improves to 15-9, 3-3.

In game two, Philip Morrison earned the win (4-1) after allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

Senior RHP Brett Nagy (Jacksonville/Bolles/FCCJ) was tagged with the loss (2-2) after allowing five runs on seven hits while walking two and tying a career-high with eight strikeouts.

Mercer jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second after a three run home run to left field by Shawn Barrett.

JU answered with two runs in the top of the third after an RBI grounder by McHugh and an RBI single to right field by Clifford.

The Bears increased their lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third after an RBI double by Daniel Hurst scored Eric Renfroe from first with two outs. Mercer made it 5-2 in the fourth after an RBI single by Billy Shaughnessy.

In game one, freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) finished with two hits and an RBI but Mercer used a six run sixth inning to defeat JU baseball, 2-1.

Hunter Abercrombie (3-1) earned the complete game victory after allowing two runs on nine hits while walking none and striking out six in 9.0 innings.

Junior RHP Neal Frontz (Jacksonville/Trinity Christian/Florida College) was tagged with the loss (3-1) after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings.

Mercer jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning after a pair of RBI singles by Renfroe and Brandon Reichert.

JU answered with a run in the top of the third after an RBI double by Clifford down the right field line. The Dolphins evened the game (2-2) in the fourth when Lopez hit an RBI single to left field.

Mercer opened up an 8-2 lead in the sixth after plating six runs on three hits, including a grand slam to left field by Hurst.

JU will next face Bradley at Alexander Brest Field on Tuesday, March 15, at noon.
