Baseball Rallies for 10-9 win over No. 18 UCF

ORLANDO - Sophomore Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Englewood) finished 4-for-5 with three RBI and senior Hunter Davis (Wakulla, Fla.) earned his sixth save to lead JU baseball to a 10-9 win over No. 18 UCF, Monday evening at Jay Bergman Field. Junior Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day), senior Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.) and freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) each finished with multiple hits. JU (14-14, 4-8 A-Sun) scored more than five runs for only second time in eight games, while the Golden Knights (25-6, 7-2) dropped only their second conference game of the season.
Freshman RHP Matt Davis (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) earned the win (2-1) after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking none and striking out three in 2.0 innings of relief. Hunter Davis earned the save after allowing only one run on one hit while walking one in 1.0 innings.
Dominic Petracca (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs in two hits while walking two and striking out one in 0.2 innings of work.
Trailing, 7-4, the Dolphins answered with six runs on four hits in the seventh to make it 10-7. Murphy drove in James with an RBI single up the middle before sophomore Doug Fowler scored on a wild pitch by Abriola. With the bases loaded and two outs, Lopez cleared the bases with a double down the left-field line. McHugh ended the scoring with an RBI triple down the right-field line.
JU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third after a two-run double by Murphy with two outs. Lopez led off the inning with a single to center. In the next at-bat, junior Logan James (Clearwater, Fla.) hit a chopper to first but Ryan Bono could not get the ball out of his glove to allow both runners to be safe. With two outs, Murphy hit a ball into the left-center gap to clear the bases.
UCF evened the score, 2-2, in the bottom of the second after a two-run homer to left field by Matt Horwath.
The Dolphins recaptured the lead, 3-2, when Brickle hit a towering solo home run over the right-field wall with a full-count.
The Golden Knights tied the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the third when Drew Butera and Kevin Richmond hit back-to-back doubles with two outs. UCF took at 5-3 lead in the fifth after a John-Michael Howell hit a two-run home run to right field.
JU cut the deficit to 5-4 in the sixth when senior Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.) drove in Brickle from third with a two-out base hit to left. Brickle reached base with a double into the left-center gap and then moved to third on a groundout by freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.).
UCF made it 7-4 in the sixth when Matt Ray hit an RBI double down the right field line and Courtney Probst scored from third base on a wild pitch.
Trailing 10-7, the Golden Knights made it 10-8 after Marshall Bernhard scored from second on a throwing error by James at third. UCF added another run in the ninth when Bono hit an RBI single to right field.
JU will face cross-town rival North Florida for the Mayor's Cup at Alexander Brest Field on Wednesday, March 30, at 7 p.m.
