Baseball Falls to North Florida, 8-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) and junior Logan James (Clearwater, Fla.) each recorded a hit, while freshman Matt Davis (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) hurled 2.1 innings of hitless relief but JU baseball fell to North Florida, 8-0, in the annual Mayor's Cup Wednesday evening at Alexander Brest Field. JU (14-15, 4-8 A-Sun) dropped below .500 for the second time this season, while UNF (24-9, 9-6 Peach Belt) won its eighth game in nine contests.
Ryan Amason (4-1) earned the win, in a pre-determined start, after allowing no runs on one hit while striking out three in 3.0 innings of work.
Senior RHP Brett Nagy (2-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on six hits while walking one and striking out two in 1.1 innings. Matt Davis struck out three batters in his 2.1 inning and sophomore Andrew Laughter (Longwood, Fla.) and freshman John Locklear (Winter Park, Fla.) added 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
UNF jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after the Ospreys plated six runners on six hits in the second inning. The Ospreys added another run in the fifth and the eighth innings to end the scoring in the contest.
JU will next host Atlantic Sun rival Florida Atlantic on Friday, April 1, at 12 p.m. to begin a three-game series at Alexander Breast Field.
