Baseball Falls to Campbell, 6-3, Despite Delay
April 8, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.), junior Logan James (Clearwater, Fla.) and sophomores Dough Fowler (High Point, N.C.) and Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Edgewood) each recorded two hits, but Campbell used a four-run third inning to defeat the Dolphins, 6-3, Friday evening at Alexander Brest Field. JU (16-18, 6-10 A-Sun) dropped its second-consecutive game, while Campbell (14-15, 3-7 A-Sun) won its first road contest of the season (1-13). The contest was delayed one hour and 23 minutes due to a broken fuse in the lights of the Alexander Brest Complex in the top of the ninth inning.
Nate Logan (3-2) earned the win after allowing no runs on two hits with one walk in 4.0 innings of relief. Justin Deutsch earned his first save of the season after allowing only one hit in 1.2 innings of relief.
Junior LHP Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) was tagged with the loss (2-3) after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
Campbell jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the third inning when Tim Holt hit an RBI single through the left side, Mike Priest drove a two-run double to left center and Ricky Howard hit an RBI double to right field.
JU cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the third when senior Alex Jamieson (Sarasota, Fla.) hit a two-run double to dead center field.
James led off the inning with a single to right before Murphy doubled to left field. Jamieson followed with a double to clear the bases. The Dolphins made it 4-3 in the fourth after a sacrifice fly to left by sophomore Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) drove in McHugh from third.
The Camels made it 6-3 in the sixth when Justin Phillips hit a corkscrew shot down the first base line to drive in two runs with two outs. Luke Reiland led off the inning with a walk before Jeff Randol hit a single to center field. After a sacrifice bunt by Matt Marek, Phillips hit a twisting bouncer past a diving Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) to clear the bases.
JU and Campbell will conclude its three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game can heard live on ESPN 1460 with Cole Pepper calling the play-by-play and former Dolphin Jason Ryals providing color commentary. The Dolphin Pre-Game Show will begin 15 minutes before the first pitch.
