Gardner-Webb Sweeps Baseball With 9-3 Win In Game Two

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Senior Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.), junior Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.), sophomore Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) and freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) each finished with three hits, but Gardner-Webb used a five-run second inning to defeat JU baseball, 9-3, Saturday afternoon in game two of a doubleheader at Varsity Field. Senior Jon Galui (Palm Beach, Fla.) also hit his second home run of the season. JU falls to 17-23 overall and 7-14 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, while Gardner-Webb improves to 16-20, 6-9.

Brandon Martin (2-4) earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in 4.0 innings of a pre-determined start.

Junior LHP Kyle DeVries (Holland, Mich.) was tagged with the loss (6-3) after allowing six runs on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.

GWU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first after an RBI single to center by Matt Maloney.

JU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second when Galui hit a two-run shot over the right field wall after junior Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) hit a single to center.

The Bulldogs made it 6-2 in the third after an RBI single to left by Ryan Sickles, an RBI single to left by Jay McConnell and a three-run homer to left by Maloney.

The Dolphins made it 6-3 in the top of the fifth when sophomore Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Edgewood) hit an RBI ground out to short. Sophomore Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) led off the inning with a single to second base before moving to third on a double to center by McHugh.

The Bulldogs increased the lead to 9-3 in the bottom of the seventh after scoring three runs on four hits while taking advantage of a throwing error by senior Alex Jamieson (Sarasota, Fla.) on a run-down at third base.

JU will continue Atlantic Sun Conference play this weekend as the Dolphins host Lipscomb for a three-game series at Alexander Brest Field. The first game will be on Friday, April 22, at 7 p.m.
