Gardner-Webb Defeats Baseball, 9-4, In Game One

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Sophomore Logan James (Clearwater, Fla.) and junior Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) each finished with three hits to spark a late Dolphin rally, but Gardner-Webb used a four-run eighth inning to defeat JU baseball, 9-4, Saturday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader at Varsity Field. JU falls to 17-22 overall and 7-13 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, while Gardner-Webb improves to 15-20, 5-9.
After JU rallied to within 5-4 in the top of the eighth, GWU answered with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the eighth to pull away for good. Josh Martin (3-0) earned the win after allowing no runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Brian Martin earned the save after hurling 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Junior RHP Neal Frontz (Jacksonville/Trinity Christian/Florida College) was tagged with the loss (5-3) after allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.
GWU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Billy McCarson hit an RBI single to third before Jay McConnell scored from second on an error by James. The Bulldogs made it 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Jeremy McCann laced a two-run triple to right field.
JU cut the deficit to 5-4 in the top of the eighth when Gronkowski led off with a solo homer to left, James hit an RBI base hit to left, freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) hit a run-scoring single to left and James scored on a balk by Brandon Martin.
