Feb. 7, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior designated hitter Thomas LePage went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI to help spark a seven-run fourth inning as the Dolphins defeated Georgia Southern, 10-5, Tuesday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field.

JU (2-0), which has scored 28 runs in its first two games, exploded for seven runs on five in the fourth innings to give the Dolphins a 10-0 lead. Georgia Southern (1-1) answered with a five-run fifth, but would not cross the plate for the remainder of the evening.

"Offensively, we're doing a good job of driving in runs and that's making things easier on our pitching staff," said JU head coach Terry Alexander, who picked up career win No. 493 with the victory. "Timely hitting is what we need to continue to do to be successful."

Junior RHP Justin Young (1-0) picked up the win after hurling 1.2 innings of relief. Junior RHP D.J. Ackley also added two innings of scoreless relief to end the game. Offensively, junior third baseman Daniel Murphy finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Senior first baseman Gordie Gronkowski went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while sophomore Matt Lopez chipped in with two hits and two RBI to lead the Dolphin offense.

JU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when LePage hit an RBI single to left field to capitalize on an error by Jeremy Beckham at short. With one out, junior left field Pete Clifford reached on an error by Beckham and then stole second base. After a come-backer by Murphy, Gronkowski reached on a single to short. With Clifford on third and Gronkowski on first, LePage followed with a single to left field to drive in the game's first run.

The Dolphins increased the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third when Gronkowski hit a towering two-run home run to left field. With one out, Murphy doubled to right center before Gronkowski smashed his first homer of the season.

JU made it 10-0 in the bottom of the fourth after a two-run single to left-center by Murphy, a two-run single through the left side by LePage, an RBI single through the left side by junior right fielder Mike McCallister and a two-run single off the pitcher by Lopez, all with two outs.

Georgia Southern cut the lead to 10-5 in the top of the fifth after an RBI single to short by Chris Hollis, an RBI double down the left-field line by Brett Pelfrey, a pair of run scoring wild pitches and an RBI single through the left side by Mike Economos.

The Dolphins continue play this week at Alexander Brest Field against Bethune-Cookman on Friday, Feb. 10, at 4 p.m.
