Late rally dooms Baseball in 4-3 loss to Bethune-Cookman

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior center fielder Justin Young went 3-for-4 and the Dolphin pitching staff allowed only three earned runs, but the JU baseball team could not hold on to a one-run lead in the eighth in a 4-3 loss to Bethune-Cookman, Friday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field.

JU (2-1) held a 3-1 lead after two innings as the Dolphins did not record an extra base hit in the contest. Bethune-Cookman (2-2) got a two-run double in the eighth by Chris Brown to take the lead for good.

Francisco Rodriguez (1-0) earned the win after hurling four innings of one-hit relief with five strikeouts.

Junior RHP D.J. Ackley (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing a run in 1.1 innings of relief.

Bethune-Cookman jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Jose Ortiz scored on a fielding error in right on a base hit by Chris Henault.

JU evened the contest in the bottom of the first after junior third baseman Daniel Murphy scored from third on a fielding error by Ortiz in center field.

The Dolphins pushed the advantage to 3-1 in the bottom of the second after an RBI single to third base by junior left fielder Pete Clifford and a bases loaded RBI walk by Murphy. With one out, freshman catcher Brad Simmons walked. Young and junior second baseman Logan James followed with a pair of singles to load the bases. Clifford followed with a drive to third to score Simmons and Murphy walked with the bases loaded.

The Wildcats cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth after Henault hit an RBI single to left with two outs.

BCC retook the lead 4-3 after a two-run double by Chris Brown in the top of the eighth with two outs.

The Dolphins and Wildcats continue their three-game series at Jackie Robinson Park at 1 p.m.
