Baseball takes series over Bethune-Cookman with 8-2 win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior right fielder Mike McCallister went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double and three RBI and sophomore LHP Matt Dobbins hurled seven shutout innings to lead the JU baseball team to an 8-2 win over Bethune-Cookman, Sunday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field.

JU (4-1) scored a run in the second, three runs in the fourth and four runs in the eighth inning to win the three-game series. Bethune-Cookman (2-3) scored both runs in the top of the ninth.

"It's early and we're still trying to figure out who our players are right now," said JU head coach Terry Alexander, who earned career win No. 494. "I'm just glad to see us respond with two consecutive wins after our first sign of adversity (a loss) on Friday."

Dobbins (1-0) earned his first win of the season after scattering three hits, while fanning seven batters, through seven shutout innings. Sophomore Matt Lopez finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and junior Thomas LePage went 2-for-4 to round out the Dolphins with multiple hits. Junior Daniel Murphy also connected on his second home run of the season.

Dustin Blackwell (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out five in six innings. Chris Henault went 2-for-3 with two doubles and Colin Irvine finished 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Wildcats.

JU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after a solo home run by McCallister to left field.

The Dolphins increased the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth after a solo homer to right field by Murphy and a two-run single by Lopez. Murphy led off the inning with a shot over the right-center wall on a 2-0 pitch from Blackwell. With one out, LePage singled through the left side. McCallister followed with a double down the third-base line to move LePage to third. In the next at-bat, Lopez hit a shot back up the middle to plate both runners.

JU increased the lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the eighth after a two-run homer down the left-field line by McCallister, a run scoring error and an RBI single by junior Justin Young. LePage led off the inning with a single up the middle before McCallister pulled a shot down the left-field line for his second round tripper of the game. Lopez followed with single through the left side and then scored on a three-base throwing error by third baseman Chris Brown on a sacrifice bunt attempt by freshman Brad Simmons. Young followed with a high pop to right which blew back fair for an RBI single.

The Wildcats finally got on the board to make it 8-2 in the ninth after an RBI single by Jorge Mico and a sacrifice fly by Brown.

The Dolphins begin a three-game series against USF at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Red McEwen Field.
