Baseball pounds Belmont, 12-2, in A-Sun opener

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore LHP Matt Dobbins hurled another gem and the Dolphins scored 12 runs on 15 hits as the JU baseball team dismantled Belmont, 12-2, in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener Friday evening at Alexander Brest Field. The Dolphins are off to their best start since going 19-3 during the 1989 season under former head coach Tom Bradley.
JU (15-3, 1-0) scored a run in all but two innings, including the first five innings of the contest. Belmont (8-5, 0-1) starter Charles Lee was roughed up by the Dolphins after being named conference pitcher of the week earlier this week.
"We did everything right in each area today (hitting, fielding, pitching) and when that happens you are probable going to end up in the win column," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Hopefully we can carry this over to tomorrow because every team in the A-Sun in dangerous."
Dobbins (5-0) won his fifth consecutive decision after allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in eight innings. Junior Justin Young led the Dolphin offense by going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Junior Mike McCallister went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI, while junior Thomas LePage and freshman Brad Simmons also added multiple hits. Junior Pete Clifford extended his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games.
Belmont jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Matt Reynolds stole third base and immediately came home when Simmons' throw bounced into left field.
JU answered with three run in the bottom of the first after an RBI single to left by junior Daniel Murphy and a two-run double down the left-field line by McCallister. The Dolphins added another run in the bottom of the second when Clifford drove in Simmons from third with a grounder to first.
JU increased the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third when Simmons drove in McCallister from third with a single through the right side. The Dolphins made it 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Clifford scored on a throwing error to third base by Bruin first baseman Carlo Testa.
The Dolphins increased the lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the fifth when junior Logan James drove in junior Thomas LePage from third with a grounder to first before Young hit a two-run double down the right-field line.
Belmont added a run in the top of the eighth inning when Derek Wiley hit an RBI single to right center.
JU made it 12-2 in the bottom of the eighth after freshman Stefan Hertel hit an RBI single to center, McCallister scored on a wild pitch and freshman Anthony Bernazard hit an RBI single to right field.
The Dolphins continue their three-game series against Belmont on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Alexander Brest Field.
