Baseball defeats Wagner, 7-2
March 14, 2006
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior Pete Clifford extendied his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games and junior Mike McCallister went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead the JU baseball team to a 7-2 win over Wagner, Tuesday evening at Alexander Brest Field.
JU (17-4) got a combined effort from the bullpen as four Dolphins allowed only two runs in the contest. Wagner (0-7) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second but could not hold down the Dolphin offense.
"We did what we needed to do to win," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "We just have to come back tomorrow and continue to do what makes us successful. Hopefully, we can jump out to an early lead so we can save our staff for this weekend."
Senior LHP Aaron Parvey (2-1) earned the win after hurling three innings of shutout relief. Senior RHP James Murdock also added two innings of hitless relief. Senior Gordie Gronkowski extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a double.
Trailing 1-0, JU answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run double to right center by junior Don Vickers. The Dolphins made it 4-0 in the bottom of the third when junior Thomas LePage hit an RBI single to center and McCallister drove in a run with a double off the left-field wall.
JU added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth after a pair of RBI singles by McCallister and sophomore Matt Lopez. The Dolphins made it 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh when McCallister scored on a throwing while stealing third base.
Wagner added a run in the top of the eighth when Pete Delleani hit an RBI single up the middle.
The Dolphins will conclude their two-game set against Wagner at Alexander Brest Field on Wednesday at noon.
