Baseball sweeps Wagner, 9-5

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman LHP Garrett Dunlap earned his first career win and junior Justin Young went 3-for-3 with three doubles to lead the JU baseball team to a 9-5 win over Wagner, Wednesday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field. The Dolphins are off to their best start since going 19-3 during the 1989 season under former head coach Tom Bradley.

JU (18-4) is now 5-0 against teams from the northeast with wins over Ohio State, UConn, Penn State and Wagner. Wagner (0-8) rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth but sophomore LHP Matt Dobbins pitched a scoreless ninth to end the game.

Dunlap (1-0) earned the win after allowing only one run and one hit with two walks and three strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Junior Logan James went 2-for-4 and junior Daniel Murphy drove in four runs. Senior Gordie Gronkowski extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single.

Tyler Weston (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) with three walks and a strikeout in 5.0 innings.

JU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first when Murphy hit a sacrifice fly to center and Young scored on a passed ball.

Wagner got on the board with a run in the second after Ed Sudol hit an RBI grounder to short.

The Dolphins increased the lead to 3-1 in the third when Murphy hit an RBI grounder to short. JU made it 5-1 in the fourth after freshman Brian Hudgins drove in two runs with a double. The Dolphins added two more runs in the sixth when Lopez scored on an error and Murphy drew a bases loaded walk.

Wagner made it 7-5 in the eighth when Dan Morvay hit a sacrifice fly to left, Nick Papa drew a bases loaded walk, Brian Scrocca drew a bases loaded walk and Michael Picarello drew a bases loaded walk.

JU padded the lead to 9-5 in the eighth when Murphy hit a sacrifice fly to right and Gronkowski drove in a run with a single.

The Dolphins will return to Atlantic Sun Conference this weekend as the Dolphins travel to Campbell for a three-game set this weekend.
