Baseball handles Harvard, 16-4

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Gordie Gronkowksi went 2-for-4 with an RBI to extend his career high hitting streak to 19 games while sophomore RHP Matt Davis and senior LHP Donald Brickle combined to allow only one earned run to lead the JU baseball team to a 16-4 win over Harvard, Saturday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field. With the win, the Dolphins are now 8-0 against opponents from the northeast.

JU (21-7) pounded out 16 runs on 15 hits, including seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Harvard (1-7) was trailing only 6-3 in the fourth but the Crimson bullpen allowed 10 runs on eight hits with five walks in the final two innings.

"I'm happy our offense has returned because we were in a funk last week," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "It was a close game, like I expected, but we got into their bullpen in the late innings."

Davis (2-1) earned the win after allowing three runs (none earned) on five hits while walking two and striking out a season-high seven batters. Brickle earned his first save of the year after allowing only one run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout in four innings of relief. Junior Pete Clifford finished 3-for-5 with two RBI while Daniel Murphy went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Junior Justin Young finished 2-for-3 with a home run while junior Thomas LePage rounded out the Dolphin's multi-hit performers by going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Shawn Haviland (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on four hits with three walks in 1.1 innings. Reliever Javier Castellanos hurled 2.2 innings of scoreless relief while Lance Salsgiver led the Crimson offense with two hits and two RBI.

JU took an early 3-0 lead in the first when Gronkowski hit an RBI single through the left side and freshman Brian Hudgins hit a two-run double to left center. The Dolphins added two more runs in the second after an RBI single through the right side by Clifford and a sacrifice fly to left by Murphy.

Harvard cut the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the third when Salsgiver hit a two-run double in the left-field corner. The Crimson made it 5-3 in the fourth when Chris Mackey hit an RBI single up the middle.

JU extended the lead to 6-3 in the fourth when Young led off the inning with a solo home run to left center.

The Dolphins opened the flood gates in the bottom of the seventh after scoring seven runs on five hits to make it 13-3. Gronkowski scored on a wild pitch by Brad Unger with the bases loaded, junior James Potucek walked in a run with the bases loaded, junior Logan James hit a two-run single through the right side, Murphy laced an RBI single to right and LePage hit a two-run single to left field to end the scoring.

Harvard added another run in the top of the eighth when Josh Klimkiewicz hit an RBI grounder to short.

JU added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth when Clifford hit an RBI single to right and Murphy clubbed a two-run homer over the right-field wall.

The Dolphins will conclude their three-game set against Harvard tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Alexander Brest Field.
