Baseball rallies again to set up 4-3 win over Stetson in the 12th
April 14, 2006
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior LHP Aaron Parvey went a career-high seven innings in relief and junior Pete Clifford recorded the game-winning single in the 12th to give the JU baseball team a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Stetson, Friday evening at Alexander Brest Field.
With the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 12th with two outs, Clifford hit a come-backer off the mound and into center field which allowed junior Justin Young to score from second. The Dolphins took advantage of two walks by Hatter reliever Nathan Nery.
"I'm proud of the effort our guys played with today and Parvey pitched his heart out," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "The biggest key for us is the fact that we got the win while only using two pitchers in 12 innings."
JU (27-10, 9-4) rallied for the fourth time in their last five games as the Dolphins ended an eight-game winning streak by Stetson (20-15, 6-7). The Dolphins have now won four consecutive conference games as they kept a stronghold on first place in the A-Sun.
Parvey (4-1) earned the win after retiring 17 consecutive batters while not allowing a hit in a career-high seven relief innings. Junior Daniel Murphy finished 3-for-5 to lead the Dolphin offense. Sophomore LHP Matt Dobbins got his second straight no-decision despite allowing only two hits in five innings.
Nery (4-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing a run on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings.
JU took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Gronkowski scored on a fielder's choice force out at second base when junior Thomas LePage's was misplayed by Shane Jordan in centerfield. Gronkowski led off the inning with a double after having his 26-game hitting snapped on Wednesday against Florida State.
In the second inning, Stetson threatened with the bases loaded and no one out, but Dobbins got consecutive pop flies in the infield and then struck out Adam Tindle looking to end the inning.
After hurling four no-hit innings, Stetson got three runs on Dobbins to lead 3-2 in the fifth. The Hatters got runs from a single by Shane Jordan to right, an RBI double to left by Braedyn Pruitt and a bases loaded walk to Brian Bocock. With bases still loaded and one out, Dobbins struck out Brian Pruit swinging and forced Tindle to ground out to short to end the threat.
The Hatters threatened again in the top of the seventh with a runner on third and only one out, but Parvey got a pop out and a fly out to get out of the inning.
The Dolphins rallied for a run in the eighth when sophomore Matt Lopez scored from third on a squeeze bunt by freshman Anthony Bernazard. Lopez led off the inning with a double and then moved to third on a passed ball.
The Dolphins and Hatters will conclude their three-game series tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Alexander Brest Field. Both games will be heard live on ESPN 1460 with Cole Pepper calling the play-by-play. The Dolphin Pre-Game Show will begin 15 minutes prior to Game 1.
