Baseball splits doubleheader with Stetson

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Dolphins rallied in the first game and then fell short in the night-cap as the JU baseball team split a doubleheader, 7-6, 9-11, with Stetson on Saturday at Alexander Brest Field.
JU (28-12, 10-5) rallied for the fifth time in six games to take its third consecutive A-Sun series this season. Stetson (21-16, 7-8) outscored the Dolphins 9-7 in the final four innings to scrape out a win in the finale.
"It was good to win the series because that is what we wanted to accomplish coming into this weekend," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "I'm not feeling too good about how we played overall against Stetson."
Overall, freshman Anthony Bernazard led the Dolphin offense by finishing 5-for-9 with a double and two RBI. Sophomore Matt Lopez went 4-for-8 with a home run and four RBI. Junior Daniel Murphy also finished 4-for-9 with two RBI.
In game one, junior Justin Young (2-2) earned the win in relief and sophomore RHP Matt Davis earned his second save to lead the Dolphins to a 7-6 come-from-behind win. Junior RHP D.J. Ackley earned the no-decision despite hurling a season-high 10 strikeouts in 7.1 innings.
Trailing 2-0, the Dolphins took a 3-2 lead in the fifth when Bernazard pulled a two-run double down the first base line and Murphy hit dropped an RBI single to right with two outs. JU pushed the lead to 4-2 in the seventh when Lopez hit a solo shot over the left field wall.
After Stetson recaptured the lead, 5-4, JU rallied for three runs in the eighth after Murphy scored on a passed ball and Tiner drove in two runs with a double in the right-center gap.
The Hatters rallied for a run in the ninth but Kevin Mierzwinski was gunned down at the plate, after a throwing error, to end the game.
Trailing 1-0 in the night-cap, the Dolphins rallied for two runs in the third after a pair of RBI singles by Lopez and Murphy.
After tying the contest in the fourth, Stetson took a 7-2 lead after scoring five runs in the sixth. Brian Pruitt hit a three-run homer to left center and Brandon Paritz drove in two runs with a double down the third-base line.
JU cut the deficit to 7-5 in the sixth when sophomore Brad Simmons hit an RBI triple to right, Lopez lined an RBI single to right and Clifford drove in a run with a single up the middle.
The Hatters increased the lead to 11-5 in the seventh after scoring four runs on four hits.
The Dolphins cut the deficit to 11-9 in the seventh after an RBI single to center by sophomore John Tiner, an RBI walk by Simmons, an RBI groundout by Lopez and a sacrifice fly to right by Clifford.
JU will continue A-Sun play as the Dolphins host East Tennessee State at 7 p.m. on Friday at Alexander Brest Field. The contest will be heard live on ESPN 1460 with Cole Pepper calling the play-by-play. The Dolphin Pre-Game Show will begin 15 minutes prior to first pitch.
