Baseball powers past Florida Atlantic, 14-7, in game one

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Senior Gordie Gronkowski went 4-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBI to lead the JU baseball team to a 14-7 win over Florida Atlantic in game one of an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader, Saturday afternoon at FAU Field.

JU (31-13, 13-6) pounded out 14 runs on 17 hits, including six runs in the eighth. Florida Atlantic (22-20, 8-11) put up seven runs on 11 hits but could not take a lead throughout the game.

"Our offense did a great job of jumping on Mickey Story early and our bullpen made some big pitches when they needed to," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "This win was huge for us because we took a game with one of the top pitchers in the conference on the hill."

Sophomore LHP Matt Dobbins (9-0) snapped a three-game no-decision streak after allowing five runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Sophomore RHP Matt Davis tallied his third save of the season after hurling 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Freshman Brad Simmons went 3-for-3 with three RBI and junior Daniel Murphy finished 3-for-5 with a triple, a home run and two RBI to lead the Dolphin offense.

Mickey Storey (5-7) was tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs on 12 hits with five strikeouts in four innings.

After FAU cut the lead to 8-7 in the seventh, JU answered with six runs on five hits in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Clifford led off the inning with a single to left center before Murphy drove him home with an RBI triple to right center. Gronkowski followed with an RBI single down the third-base line. With one out, Simmons hit a two-run single up the middle before Young cleared the bases with a two-run shot to right center.

JU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first when Gronkowski hit a two-run homer over the left field wall with two outs. Murphy hit a full count pitch up the middle before Gronkowski followed with his eighth home run of the season.

FAU evened the contest in the bottom of the first when Jordan Hafer scored on a double play and Tim Mascia drove in a run with a double down the right field line.

The Dolphins took a 3-2 lead in the third when Gronkowski hit an RBI double to left center. Clifford led off the inning with a bunt single before crossing the plate on Gronkowski's third RBI of the contest. JU increased the lead to 4-2 in the fourth when Simmons hit a line drive over the right field wall.

The Owls cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Tim Mascia led off the inning with a solo homer down the right-field line.

JU increased the lead to 8-3 in the fifth when Murphy led off the inning with a solo homer to right field, LePage hit an RBI double down the right-field line, Lopez hit an RBI single to center and freshman Anthony Bernazard drove in a run with a fielder's choice to short.

FAU cut the margin to 8-5 after Mario Duarte scored from third on a wild pitch and Ramirez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Owls threatened with the bases loaded with two out in the sixth but senior LHP Aaron Parvey forced Hafer to fly out to center to end the inning.

FAU cut the deficit to 8-7 in the seventh when William Block hit an RBI single to third and Travis Ozga hit an RBI single to right.
