Baseball completes sweep with 11-4 win over Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Junior Daniel Murphy and sophomore Matt Lopez each extended their hitting streaks to 10 games while senior LHP Aaron Parvey earned his fifth victory to lead the JU baseball team to an 11-4 win and a clean sweep over Florida Atlantic, Sunday afternoon at FAU Field.

The Dolphins (33-13, 15-6) earned their second A-Sun sweep this season (North Florida) and their first sweep over FAU since 1994. FAU (22-22, 8-13) finished with three more errors which led to three Dolphin runs.

"This weekend was huge for us because it puts us back on top of the conference," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Hopefully our bats can stay hot as we head into next week."

Parvey (5-1) earned the win after allowing only four hits in four shutout innings of relief. Freshman RHP Joey Wedner allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts in two innings of work to make his first career start. Freshman RHP Tim Brown picked up his second save of the season after closing out the final three innings. Murphy finished 3-for-4 to lead the Dolphin offense.

Will Mann (2-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs (five earned) on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts in five innings.

JU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first when sophomore Matt Dobbins hit a two-run double in the left-field gap. With two outs, Murphy hit a single to left before Gronkowski followed with a walk. On the first pitch, Dobbins poked a drive into the gap to clear the bases.

FAU evened the contest in the bottom of the first when Ovy Ramirez hit a two-run double to left fied.

The Dolphins increased the lead to 6-2 in the second when freshman Anthony Bernazard hit an RBI single to right and three runners scored on two throwing errors by Owl infielders.

JU increased the lead to 8-2 in the fifth when junior Justin Young laced a two-run single to right. Junior Mike McCallister and Lopez led off with back-to-back singles before freshman Brad Simmons moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt.

The Dolphins added another run in the sixth when McCallister hit an RBI single up the middle. JU made it 11-2 in the seventh when Simmons led off the inning with a home run to right center and Gronkowski drove in a run with a single up the middle.

FAU got a run in the eighth when Justin Martin hit an RBI groundout to Brown to score Mascia from third. The Owls added another run in the ninth when Mario Duarte hit an RBI double to right center.

JU travels to play No. 10 Florida State at Mike Martin Field on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
