Baseball outlasts Kennesaw State, 8-6, in game one

KENESSAW, Ga. - Sophomore LHP Matt Dobbins won his 10th game of the year and sophomore RHP Matt Davis closed out the game with his fourth save to lead the JU baseball team to an 8-6 win over Kennesaw State, Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at Stillwell Stadium.
Dobbins (10-0) earned his second consecutive win after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven his with three walks and five strikeouts in six innings of work. Sophomore RHP Matt Davis earned his fourth save after allowing only one run (unearned) on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of relief. Junior Daniel Murphy and sophomore Matt Lopez (team-high three hits) each extended their career high hitting streaks to 11 games.
"It wasn't pretty but we find ways to win these games," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Davis made some big pitches and things went out way."
JU (34-14) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning when Murphy hit a two-run single up the middle and Lopez poked an RBI single through the right side. Freshman Anthony Bernazard led off the inning with a walk before junior Pete Clifford followed with a double to left center to set the table.
KSU (22-24, 11-14) answered with two run in the bottom of the first after an RBI double down the third-base line by Scott Hendrix and a run scoring wild pitch with two outs. The Owls evened the contest in the second when Jacob Roberts pulled an RBI bunt single to the right side.
The Dolphins retook the lead, 4-3, in the third when freshman Brad Simmons hit an RBI double to right with two outs. After two quick outs, junior Mike McCallister and Lopez laced back-to-back singles through the left side to set up Simmons.
JU increased the lead to 6-3 in the fourth when senior Gordie Gronkowski ripped an RBI double off the right-center wall and Lopez pushed an RBI single to right field.
The Owls cut the deficit to 6-4 in the fifth when Andy Hudson hit an RBI double down the left-field line.
The Dolphins added a run in the seventh when Gronkowski hit an RBI single through the left side.
KSU cut the lead to 7-5 in the eighth after a sacrifice fly to right by Matt Hopkins. The Owls threatened with the bases loaded and only one out but Davis struck out Jay Morrow and Hendrix to end the inning.
The Dolphins added an insurance run the ninth when Bernazard hit a swinging single to third to drive in Simmons from third.
The Owls added a run in the ninth when Nelson drove in a run with a grounder to third base. With the bases loaded and two outs, Davis ended the contest with pop out to short to end the game.
