Final Stats

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Gordie Gronkowski scored the game-winning run off a double to right center by junior Mike McCallister in the bottom of the 10th to give the JU baseball team a 4-3 win over Mercer, Friday evening in game two of a doubleheader at Alexander Brest Field.

The win gives JU (38-14, 20-6) its seventh consecutive conference series win, its fifth consecutive victory and clinches the No. 1 seed in the A-Sun Championship presented by Progress Energy.

"Special things happen to this team when we get runners on base and we proved it again tonight," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Andrew Urena is one of the top closers in the country and we gave them a second life when they scored in the ninth to tie it."

With the score tied, 3-3, Gronkowski hit a single up the middle with one out to become the first runner allowed by Urena after hurling a perfect ninth inning. McCallister followed with a drive to the right center gap which was overrun by Eric Renfroe in center field. Due to the misplay in center, Gronkowski made a break for the plate and slid under the tag by Josh Thompson at the plate to end the game.

Sophomore RHP Matt Davis (5-2) earned the win after allowing no runs in two-thirds of an inning. Junior RHP D.J. Ackley earned the no decision despite allowing only two runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in seven innings of work. Junior Daniel Murphy had his career-high 14-game hitting streak snapped. Junior Pete Clifford and Gronkowski each finished with two hits to lead the Dolphin offense.

Urena (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing one run (unearned) on two hits with a strikeout in 1.1 innings of relief.

JU took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning when freshman Anthony Bernazard hit an RBI single to left and an RBI single to center by Clifford.

Mercer cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third when Tyler McCarty hit an RBI single through the right side. The Bears evened the game at 2-2 in the fourth when John Dortch hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Dolphins went ahead 3-2 in the fifth when Gronkowski laced an RBI double down the left-field line. With two outs, Murphy drew a walk before Gronkowski followed with the double.

The Bears evened the game again in the ninth when Dortch hit an RBI single through the right side with two outs and a runner on third base.

JU and Mercer will conclude its series on Saturday at 7 p.m. for Senior Night. Seniors Donald Brickle, Kyle DeVries, Gordie Gronkowski, James Murdock and Aaron Parvey will be honored for their contributions to the program prior to the contest. The contest will be heard live on ESPN 1460 with Joe Block making the call. The Dolphin Pre-Game Show will air 15 minutes before first pitch.
