DELAND, Fla. - It was one of those days for the JU baseball team as the Dolphin bats went silent in an 8-3 loss to No. 4 Florida Atlantic, Thursday afternoon at Melching Field in the second day of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship presented by Progress Energy.

JU (42-16) tied a season-high by allowing 19 hits to FAU (30-27) while only generating six hits in the contest. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Dolphins and puts the squad in an elimination situation on Friday.

"These games are going to happen during the course of the year but the key is how you bounce back from them" said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "D.J. Ackley did a good job of keeping us in the ballgame but we couldn't get the big hit when we needed it."

Ackley (6-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing only three runs on 10 hits with a walk and two strikeouts in five innings of work. Junior Mike McCallister finished 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI while senior Gordie Gronkowski went 2-for-4 with a home run to lead the JU offense.

Joel Schmal (7-2) hurled the complete-game victory by allowing only three runs on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in nine innings of work. More amazingly, Schmal hurled a career-high 152 pitches to keep the Owls from elimination.

JU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when McCallister hit an RBI triple down the right-field line. With two outs, Gronkowski laced a double in the right-center gap before McCallister followed with his first triple of the season.

FAU evened the contest in the bottom of the second when Williams Block led off the inning with a solo homer down the left-field line. The Owls threatened again with the bases loaded and only one out but Ackley struck out Alex Silversmith and got Tim Mascia to fly to right to end the inning.

The Owls took a 2-1 lead in the third when Mike McKenna led off the inning with a solo shot to left field. FAU threatened with runners on first and second with no one out, but Ackley got a double-play and a ground out to short by Nick Arata to end the inning.

The Dolphins evened the game, 2-2, in the sixth when McCallister laced an RBI single to center. Junior Pete Clifford led off the inning with a double down the left-field line and then advanced to third on a heads up play when senior Gordie Gronkowski grounded out to third base.

FAU recaptured the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth when Silversmith hit a sacrifice fly to center. The Owls extended the lead to 5-2 in the seventh when Travis Ozga hit an RBI double down the left-field line and Hafer knocked an RBI single to second.

JU cut the deficit to 5-3 in the eighth when Gronkowski crushed a solo shot over the left-center wall.

The Owls opened up the game in the eighth by scoring three runs on five hits with an RBI single by Block and a two-run single down the left-field line by Daniel Cook.

The Dolphins will next compete against the loser of No. 2 Mercer/No. 3 Stetson in the third day of the A-Sun Tournament on Friday at 11 a.m. The game will be broadcast on www.judolphins.com with Cole Pepper handling the play-by-play.
