June 14, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore left-handed pitcher Matt Dobbins earned Second-Team All-Atlantic Region honors, as announced Tuesday by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

"I'm glad Matt is continuing to receive honors for the season he had," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "We are looking forward to see Matt back on the mound for us next season."

In 2006, Dobbins was named Atlantic Sun Conference "Pitcher of the Year" and earned first-team all-conference accolades after leading Dolphins with a nation's best 12 wins on the mound. He has also been named to the College Baseball Foundation and Louisville Slugger All-America team and earned third-team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honors this season. Dobbins was also a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace College Baseball Player of the Year award.

Dobbins was named A-Sun "Pitcher of the Week" after hurling a career-best one-hit complete game victory over Lipscomb to help the Dolphins secure their first-ever A-Sun regular season title on May 18.

A position player last season, Dobbins has emerged as the ace of the Dolphins' staff and one of the top pitchers in the nation in 2006. After earning a no-decision against Georgia Southern on Feb. 7, he won eight consecutive games before having his streak snapped with a no-decision against North Florida on April 7. During his streak, Dobbins went 8-0 with a 1.46 ERA, 31 strikeouts and a .247 opponent batting average in 55.2 innings of work. He has currently won his past three starts to become the first Dolphin to win 10 games in a season since Dennis Robinson in 2004.
