Terry Fillyaw

Terry Fillyaw, a 14-year veteran coach from the Florida high school ranks, comes to JU with Coach Bell after helping build the program at Trinity Catholic High School in Ocala, Fla.

Fillyaw will serve as the coach of the defensive backs at JU, a position that he has great experience after playing at Florida State in 1991 as a walk-on.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to coach at JU and the possibilities that this program has in the future," Fillyaw said. "I've worked with Coach Bell for several years and I know what it is going to take for us to succeed."

An all-around athlete growing up, Fillyaw was a teammate of Coach Bell's in high school - helping lead Lafayette High School to the state championship game in 1981.

But his experiences with winning programs continued long past his playing days. In 1997, he helped lead his alma mater back to the state championship game.

When Bell called looking for a defensive backs coach at Trinity Catholic - Fillyaw answered and delivered. At Trinity Catholic, Fillyaw assisted Bell in building a state powerhouse that won a championship in 2005 and finished as runner-up in 2006.

Born in Jacksonville, Fillyaw was a diver in the U.S. Navy for eight years - serving in Jacksonville and Charleston, S.C. His diving background earned him a spot as an extra in the movie "G.I. Jane."

"Terry brings a wealth of experience and determination to the coaching staff," Bell said. "Terry and I have a long relationship and he knows what I expect from my assistant coaches. His connections with high school coaches across the state is a huge help in our recruiting process."

Fillyaw resides in Mayo with his wife, Dana Jackson, and their four children - Emily (14), Jackson (13), Lauren (6) and Trace (2).
