Ernie Logan

Former NFL lineman Ernie Logan is in his eighth season as the Dolphins defensive line coach. Logan made an immediate impact after arriving on campus in 2004 by injecting intensity and enthusiasm to the defensive line play while also bringing techniques that he used at the pro-level.

Logan has developed the defensive front into one of the best units in the Pioneer Football League. In 2010 the d-line recorded 32 sacks led by the now graduated defensive end Bradley Burns who had eight. The 32 sacks tied Eastern Kentucky for 10th in the nation.

Another Logan protégé, senior nose tackle Mike Mayoral, had three fumble recoveries.

“He is one of the best d-line technicians I’ve ever been around, ‘’ head coach Kerwin Bell said. “He’s really studied the technical side of playing the line. Every year we’re in the top of the conference because our d-linemen make a lot of plays.’’

During his time with JU, Logan has spent some off-seasons assisting with mini camps, OTA’s (Organized Team Activities) and free agent tryouts with the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins.

Logan joined the JU staff following a nine-year career in the NFL in which he played every position on the defensive front for the New York Jets (1997-2000), Jacksonville Jaguars (1995-96), Atlanta Falcons (1993) and Cleveland Browns (1991-92). Logan appeared in 119 NFL games, including 45 starts, while recording 215 career tackles and 11 sacks. He started 38 games for the Jets from 1997-2000, where he had 164 stops and 5.5 sacks before retiring following the 2000 season.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Fayetteville, N.C., native played collegiately at East Carolina University from 1986-90, where he racked up 100 tackles (including 16 behind the line of scrimmage) and 5.0 sacks. Following his sophomore season in 1987, he was named the Most Improved Defensive Player by the ECU coaches.
