Fan Day Scrimmage set for Saturday at Plantation Park
The JU football team will take its show on the road this week as the Dolphins will scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at Plantation Park in the Julington Creek area.
The Dolphins’ “Fan Day” is built around the scrimmage, which will kick off at 1 p.m. Fans will be able to get T-shirts, purchase season tickets and food during the scrimmage with a chance to get autographs from the players afterwards.
“We are excited about this opportunity to get the players out in the community and develop a tighter relationship with the city of Jacksonville,” said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. “It also gives us a chance to prepare for a road game and how we’ll handle our gameday schedule the first two games this season.”
EARLY PRACTICE: With the weather reports calling for rain in the afternoon, the Dolphins practice for two and a half hours on Tuesday morning as they flipped their traditional one-day practice schedule. The morning practices also give the players and coaches a relief from the high temperatures that the First Coast has seen in the afternoons.
“It is important for us to get as much time as we can on the practice field and the morning practices that we’ve had are going really, really well,” Bell said.
DEEP AT RUNNING BACK: One of the pleasant surprises in camp this fall has been the depth at running back, with talented newcomers Keith Dawson and J.J. Laster living up to their billing. Combine them with the trio of Rudell Small, Ron Harris and Jimmy Sapp, and the Dolphins have a lot of options in the backfield.
Small is the leading rusher from a year ago with 490 yards in just eight games.
“We’ve got several guys who can do a lot of things for us,” Bell said. “Keith and J.J. have the potential to be very special players. Rudell has been very good throughout camp now that he is fully healed from his injuries from last season. Ron and Jimmy have been solid as well and give us the ability to break big runs inside and outside.”
