Football opens 2009 season at Webber International on Saturday
On Saturday, a new season begins for the JU football team.
No longer will the Dolphins be the new kid on the block trying to get recognition. Instead, they enter the 2009 season with a bulls-eye on their back as the defending Pioneer Football League champions.
“We’ve stressed during preseason camp that right now we’re just a one-hit wonder,” said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. “Championship programs are in the hunt for the title every year. We’ve got to be even hungrier this year because we are going to get the best game from everyone on our schedule.”
The Dolphins season opens against Webber International, a team JU knocked off for Homecoming, 51-7, last season. JU struggled in the first half before a spectacular third quarter put the game on ice.
“Webber is going to be hungry for revenge, there is no doubt about that,” Bell said. “We know what we have to do to be successful.”
Kickoff is set for 5 p.m., with the Bono’s Barbecue Pregame Show starting at 4:30 p.m. with the “Voice of the Dolphins” Barry Milligan calling the action from Legion Field in Lake Wales, Fla.
JU INSIDER SEASON DEBUT ON WEDNESDAY: With football season starting on Saturday, the JU Insider will have its season debut on Wednesday night live from Chicago Pizza (320 N. 1st St.) at the Beaches on 1010XL, starting at 7 p.m.
JU head coach Kerwin Bell will be joined by the “Voice of the Dolphins” Barry Milligan to preview the season opener at Webber International and talk about the upcoming 2009 campaign. Joining the show throughout the season will be head coaches from other JU sports, with volleyball coach Shaun Kupferberg coming on to discuss his team’s early start to the season.
The JU Insider will air from the Beaches location until the new location, the third in Jacksonville, opens at the Landing in late October.
The show will also be available live on the Internet through 1010XL.com, with the first episode being aired on a tape delay basis on ASun.TV.
