The sounds coming from D.B. Milne Field won’t be the familiar sounds of whistles, practices and cheering fans.

Instead, it will be the sounds of bulldozers, tractors and construction as a new era dawns on the complex with the installation of a new AstroTurf playing surface beginning on Monday afternoon.

“We are excited about starting this project and what it means to our campus community,” said JU president Dr. Kerry Romesburg. “This is a much-needed addition for our athletic teams, but it will also be used for intramurals, which makes this such a big project that will have an impact on all of our students.”

The project will begin with scraping up the current playing surface and installing the proper drainage system. Once the drainage is in place, the turf will be rolled out. JUDolphins.com will have a construction blog that will be updated weekly with new pictures of the project.

“This project is the start of a building period for our programs,” said JU director of athletics Alan Verlander. “JU people are starting to see our vision for JU athletics. It’s awesome that a few people have stepped up, but we need more people to jump on board in order to keep our run of championships going.

“The AstroTurf field is a much needed step for D.B. Milne Field and a major component in building the facility for what our programs need.”

The turf field is the first phase of a two-phase project, that will continue later this summer and fall with the Ron Autrey Family Track. An eight-lane Olympic-size track will surround the field, with an anticipated completion in the spring of 2011.

While the football team will be the first to benefit from the new turf field, the JU men’s and women’s lacrosse programs will also be playing their home games on the new surface in the spring of 2011. Intramural sports will also be played on the field starting this fall.
