Football scrimmage set for 1 p.m. on Saturday
From daylight to dusk on Friday, the JU football team worked in preparation for its opening scrimmage of the 2010 season. The scrimmage is set to start at 1 p.m., at Fletcher High School.

Jacksonville had its second two-a-day sessions on Friday, going for little over two hours in the morning before finishing the day with two hours of work in the evening.

“The guys are ready to hit the field and play some football tomorrow,” said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. “As coaches, we’re anxious to see how well they have taken to our system and evaluate where we are entering the next week.”

RUDELL’S FRIDAY FAST FACT: Did you know that Rudell Small became JU’s all-time leading rusher in approximately two seasons? He was hampered by injuries throughout his freshman year, limiting him to just six games. He came back with a vengeance as a sophomore and took over the all-time lead midway through his junior season.

BANGED UP: There are going to be a lot of Dolphins being held out of Saturday’s scrimmage – at least 14 at last count. There range from pulled hamstrings, to sore knees and feet. Among those not seeing action in the scrimmage are running backs Keith Dawson, Rudell Small and Michael Henzie, wide receiver Tommie Rogers and defensive linemen Ray Gault and Charles Dowdy.

“We’ve gotten after it really hard the first few days of camp and you’re going to see bumps and bruises around this time,” Bell said. “The important thing is that we get them ready for when the season starts.”

SCRIMMAGE SCHEDULE SET: The Dolphins will hold a scrimmage the final three Saturdays of training camp, starting Aug. 14.

The first scrimmage will be held at Fletcher High School, starting at 1 p.m. The second will be on Aug. 21 at The Bolles School starting at 5 p.m. The final scrimmage will be on campus on Aug. 28 and will kickoff near 10 a.m.

The Aug. 28 scrimmage is also “Dolphin Day.” Fans are encouraged to come out and take in the final preseason scrimmage as well as meet some of the Dolphins from the other sports. There will also be prizes and giveaways throughout the day. Admission is free.

SEASON TICKETS ON SALE: Season tickets are on sale for $60 with “The Grove” parking passes going for $60 as well. Visit or contact Nikki Swanson in the JU ticket office at (904) 256-7444 for more information.
