The JU football team scored in almost every way possible as they routed Valparaiso by posting several school records in an 86-7 win at Brown Field.

The 86 points is the most ever by a JU team, shattering the previous school record 55 set against UNC-Pembroke in 2007. The margin of victory shatters the previous record 52 set against Campbell in 2008.

Jacksonville led 66-7 at halftime, with a school-record 38 points in the second quarter. The offense account for just 42 of those points, aided by two interception returns for touchdowns and one blocked punt in the end zone.

The win is the fifth straight for JU, extending the winning streak to the second longest in school history.

“Everyone contributed to this win today,” said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. “Our defense made some big turnovers and scored. Our special teams got a score and our offense was able to move the ball consistently all day. We did a good job of executing throughout the game, which is something we stressed all week.”

The offense posted 658 yards, by far the most this season and setting a new program record total. The previous record was 621 set against Campbell in 2008.

Josh McGregor finished the game with 320 passing yards with three touchdowns, his fifth straight 300-yard game.

Rudell Small rushed 12 times for a season-high 192 yards and three touchdowns as JU posted 320 rushing yards. J.J. Laster scored three times, twice rushing en route to 79 yards, once receiving en route to 43 yards.

Jacksonville’s defense did its part as well.

Leonard Smith returned an interception 36 yards in the first quarter and Taylor Marsh added one of his own in the second quarter, this time from 39 yards out.

For the game, JU held the Crusaders to just 195 yards, with only 56 coming on the ground.

The Dolphins added a special team touchdown as well – with Jamal Coleman blocking a Greg Wood punt in the end zone and falling on it late in the first half.

JU posted 28 points in the first quarter, which tied the school record, and broke it in the second quarter with 38 points. The Dolphins opened a 28-0 lead in the first 13 minutes, with Philpart scoring the first touchdown on a 36-yard reception from McGregor.

Josh Philpart caught five passes for 109 yards with one touchdown.

Jacksonville returns home for Homecoming as they host Marist. Kickoff is at Noon at D.B. Milne Field.
