Bragging rights from 2010 at stake vs. Dayton
After sharing the Pioneer Football League championship last season, this week’s Jacksonville University game against Dayton has plenty riding on it.
The Dolphins (3-2, 2-0) play host to the Flyers (3-2, 1-1) at 1 p.m. at D.B. Milne Field and the winner, at least theoretically, can take bragging rights from last year. They didn’t play in 2010 when both posted 8-0 league records.
The Dolphins bring an impressive PFL streak into the game having won 13 conference games in a row. In addition, the Dolphins have a 10-game home winning streak they seek to extend. Dayton had a streak of 11 consecutive PFL wins broken last week in a 29-27 loss to Butler.
“It’s a battle of two great teams and two great programs and two teams that have dominated the conference the past few years,’’ JU coach Kerwin Bell said. Indeed they have.
Besides sharing the title last season, Dayton shared the 2009 crown with Butler and Jacksonville won outright in 2008, in large part to its 19-14 win over the Flyers. That was the last time these teams met. Dayton and San Diego shared the title in 2007.
The Dolphins come into the game on somewhat of a roll. After dropping the first two games to The Citadel and Western Illinois, JU has reeled off three straight wins including a record-setting offensive performance, 713 total yards, against Campbell two weeks ago.
JU took out Marist, 21-9, last week as the defense did a yeoman’s job by creating five turnovers and holding the Red Foxes to only 28 yards rushing on 27 attempts. The Dolphins haven’t given up a point in the first quarter this season.
The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at D. B. Milne Field and will be broadcast on 1010XL and 1010XL.com with Terry Norvelle doing the play by play and Joel Lamp offering color analysis. The Bono’s Barbeque Pregame Show begins at 12:30.
Following Saturday's game, JU has two more at home, next week against Morehead State and the following week against Davidson.
