Both Dewhirst, Bryant win weekly PFL honors
Two Jacksonville University football players have been awarded Pioneer Football League Player of the Week awards, the league announced Sunday.

Redshirt Junior Jordan Dewhirst, a safety from Fort White, Fla., was named PFL Defensive Player of the Week for his two touchdown performance in Saturday’s 31-10 win over Charleston Southern.

Dewhirst, who missed virtually all last season with a shoulder injury, scored on a 39-yard interception return and returned an on-side kickoff 44 yards for his second touchdown.

His interception return was the Dolphins’ first touchdown of the game, and season, and the kickoff return was the team’s final score.

Defensively, he also had six tackles (four solo), a pass break up and a fumble recovery. The fumble recovered setup Jacksonville’s third touchdown drive at the Charleston Southern 47-yard line. Dewhirst also was named College Sports Madness Pioneer Player of the Week.

Freshman return specialist Terrance Bryant, from Crestview, Fla., is the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week after a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Bryant’s return was the eventual game-winning score and opened the third quarter’s scoring. He finished the day with three punt returns for 62 yards.

“Both Jordan and Terrance played a great ballgame,’’ coach Kerwin Bell said. “We had an all-around team effort and their games were a reflection of how our entire team played.’’
