Dolphin Defense Sparks First Win Of '99

September 11, 1999

Davidson, N.C. - The JU Dolphins made it two in a row over Davidson defeating the Wildcats 20-15 in Davidson, NC. The JU victory spoiled the dedication of Richardson Field, the new 4,000 seat facility for football and track.

The JU defense made three fourth quarter stops when it appeared the Wildcats might take the lead. WR Brett Palmi got the Dolphins on the Board first, with a 13 yard TD reception from QB Gary Cooper. The score, on JU's opening drive, capped off a 10 play 72 yard march and made it 7-0 Jacksonville. Davidson came right back, going 8 plays, 66 yards to cut the lead to 7-6. JU retained the one point when DC failed on a two point conversion attempt.

JU extended the lead to two touchdowns on an electrifying 30 yard TD run by Jon Underhill. The half ended with Jacksonville on top, 13-6 as the point after was blocked.

Davidson cut the lead to four, 13-9, on a Daniel Hanks 32 yard field goal with 9:14 remaining in the third period. After the teams traded punts, JU was on the board again. Gary Cooper connected with Corey Donnell on a beautiful 38 yard scoring strike. The pass capped off a 78 yard drive in just five plays. David Stickler's PAT made it 20-9. The Cats would answer again. On the very next drive, Davidson marched 79 yards in 14 plays to make the score 20-15 with 12:07 remaining in the final quarter. Then, the Dolphin defense took over.

Davidson had the ball four more times in the fourth quarter and the result was punt, fumble, interception, stopped on downs. The final series came with the Cats threatening at the JU 27 yard line. DC had driven 54 yards on 11 plays when DE Will Weatherford knocked down a fourth down pass attempt to seal the victory. Several Dolphin defenders had outstanding performances. LB Pete Satur recorded double digit tackles for the second consecutive week. Versus DC, Satur collected a team high 15 tackles (8 unassisted) including two tackles for loss and a sack. He has 27 tackles in two games. LB Scott Wilson had 11 stops with one tackle for loss and a sack. CB Eric Wells had 8 unassisted tackles (10 total) while S Tyrone Wright had 8 stops and the first interception of his JU career. S Julio Izquierdo had another pick for the Dolphin "D" and CB Josh Katsur had a tackle for loss and a sack.

JU (1-1) will return to the friendly confines of Milne Field for the 1999 home opener September 18 against Chowan College. The Dolphins defeated Chowan last season 29-7 in Murfreesboro, NC.
