Jon Turner Earns Pioneer Football League Honors

Sept. 3, 2001

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior wide receiver Jon Turner (Melbourne, Fla.) was named Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for his record-setting performance in the Dolphins' 20-16, come-from-behind win at Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday. It was the first win for Jacksonville over a scholarship program since starting non-scholarship football in 1998, and broke a seven-game road losing streak for the Dolphins.

Turner caught five passes for a school-record 206 yards and one touchdown, including the game-winner as the Dolphins came back from a 10-0 deficit to record the biggest win in the four-year history of the program. Turner averaged 41.2 yards per catch, including receptions for 64, 62, 40, 32 and nine yards. With the Dolphins trailing 16-13 with 9:27 to play in the game, Turner broke free down the sideline and caught a 62-yard touchdown bomb from Gary Cooper (Jacksonville, Fla.) giving JU the lead for good. Turner also caught a nine-yard pass on third-and-eight that kept the Dolphins' drive alive as JU burned the final 8:51 with a 23-play drive that ran out the clock.

JU ran up 415 yards of total offense, while holding the Bears to a school-record low 170 yards of total offense. Lenoir-Rhyne's sole touchdown came on a 93-yard punt return in the opening quarter. The Dolphins return to action this weekend when they host No. 3 Davidson in their Pioneer Football League opener at D.B. Milne Field at 1 p.m. Davidson (1-0) enters the game with an 18-game win streak, the longest win streak in NCAA Division I.
