Dolphins Ranked No. 3 In Latest Sports Network Mid-Major Top-10 Poll
Sept. 10, 2001
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University moved up five spots to No. 3 in the latest Sports Network I-AA Mid-Major Poll released on Monday. The huge jump comes after JU thrashed No. 3 Davidson 45-3 on Saturday, ending the Wildcats' nation-best 18-game win streak. The Dolphins are 2-0 on the season for the first time since JU's inaugural season in 1998, and 1-0 in the Pioneer Football League South Division. JU plays Morehead State on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Milne Field in a crucial PFL South Division contest.
The Dolphins dominated Davidson tying a NCAA Division I-AA record by returning three interceptions for touchdowns en route to a 35-0 haltime lead. The JU defense, which has not allowed a touchdown on the season and ranks third in the Division I-AA allowing just 168.5 yards per game, picked off five passes on the day while setting a school record for the second straight game by allowing just 167 yards of total offense. The Dolphins limited the Wildcats to just 40 yards rushing and nine first downs.
Offensively, JU ran the ball a school-record 51 times for 222 yards - the fourth highest total in school history - and attempted only one pass in the second half. Senior running back Brent Alexander (Tampa, Fla.) rushed for a career-best 101 yards on 10 carries, including a 73-yard touchdown run. Alexander became the first Dolphin in 24 games to rush for 100 yards dating back to Nov. 7, 1998, when Jon Underhill (165) and Greg Portee (154) eclipsed the mark against La Salle. The Dolphins have scored 65 points in two games this season after scoring 183 points in 11 games last year.
The Sports Network I-AA Mid-Major Top-10 poll includes the 26 programs of the MAAC, NEC and Pioneer Football League, which play at a non-scholarship or limited scholarship level.
