Nov. 15, 2001
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU senior free safety/kick returner Tyrone Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) has been named Mid-Major Special Teams Co-Player of the Week by Don Hansen's Weekly Football Gazette after becoming the first player in JU history to return a kickoff for a touchdown last weekend in the Dolphins' 31-23 loss to Drake. Wright also earned Pioneer Football League Special Teams Player-of-the-Week honors following his 94-yard record-setting return.
Wright, who took the opening kick of the second half all the way to give JU a 23-14 lead, finished the game with 121 return yards as well as a team-high 11 tackles, including seven solo stops. The 6-foot-1 Jacksonville native is leading the team with a 26.1 yard-per-return average, while also leading the Dolphins with 60 tackles on the season (43 solo), including six behind the line of scrimmage. Wright, who is JU's all-time leader with 12 career interceptions, has also picked off four passes this year, including a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown against Austin Peay on Sept. 29, and is second on the team with seven pass break-ups.
Wright is one of 25 seniors who will lead the ninth-ranked Dolphins into the inaugural Pioneer Football League Championship game on Saturday against No. 2 Dayton (9-1) at noon at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, Ohio.
